BOXED ART PROJECT AWARDS

Welcome to Canterbury City Council’s Boxed Art Project page!
It’s time to announce that the Boxed Art Project People’s Choice Award voting period has closed. We will be announcing the winners of the various categories at a special Boxed Art Project Awards Lunch we have planned for the 3rd May. The winners will be posted on this site after this date.
The Boxed Art Project People’s Choice Awards was one way to thank all of the artists and community groups who participated in our project. Thank you for voting for your favourite designs and taking the time to let our participating artists and community groups know that you appreciate their work.
We have achieved our aim to paint all of the traffic signal boxes in the area and these awards acknowledge that we didn’t do it alone. Everybody in the community was invited to get involved and over 200 individuals did in fact participate. Altogether we painted eighty-eight traffic signal boxes.
That means that whenever you go to cross at any traffic lights in Canterbury, either by car or on foot, you will see community art. Our local creative minds developed a rich variety of designs which reflect the various cultures and age groups that comprise the population of the Canterbury City Council area.
As the Canterbury City area comprises a huge 33.4square kilometers, you may not get to see all the wonderful designs on all of the 88 traffic signal boxes, so please take your time and look at all of the designs in the “View Boxes” section of this website.
The award categories that were available to our participating artists are listed below.

A MESSAGE FROM THE
MAYOR AND GENERAL MANAGER

One of the projects we’re very proud of is the Boxed Art project.
Since it began in May 2005, the Boxed Art project has been a huge success. With the help of local artists and schools, 80 traffic signal boxes have been transformed into colourful creations of arts.
The paintings on our boxes reflect our City’s diversity and important themes or issues for our community such as road safety, peace and happiness, nature and the environment, support and respect.
The support from the community has been overwhelming with schools and artists coming up with creative designs, and spending time carefully painting the boxes.
This innovative project provides a great canvas to create public art and it’s helped make our City even more attractive.
These boxes are so vibrant, creative and each one is unique making our City an area where creativity and artistic flair is proudly displayed and admired.
