Councillor Karl SalehCouncillor Saleh - A Proven Community Advocate

Clr Karl (Khodr) Saleh arrived in Canterbury Area in 1985 from Lebanon.  He has lived and worked in the Canterbury City since his arrival.

He is married to Nadia Saleh with four University and high school aged children, Mohsen, Kamal, Hady And Daughter Rana.

He has qualifications in languages, journalism, International media, social and community development.

His community involvement in the Canterbury Area has started in 1989, as a community Volunteer in the Riverwood Community Centre, and also as an advocate of the interests of the Riverwood Housing Estate community at a local, state and federal level. 

Karl was elected as a Canterbury City Councillor representing the West Ward in March 2004 and was re-elected in 2008. He served as Deputy Mayor for 12 months from September 2008 to September 2009.

Karl chairs the Council Multicultural Advisory Committee, a position he has held since 2006. He has also served as vice chair of the Council Traffic Committee, and has been involved with numerous Council committees that have provided him with a clear awareness towards where the needs exist across the city and also the ability to guide improved community outcomes.

As a Councillor, Karl is actively involved in all areas of Council's responsibility with a strong focus on better access to quality Council services, affective community Developments, a safer community environment, and providing an open door policy from Council on community issues.“

During his  time as a Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Karl has introduced numerous successful initiatives and services, including the new e- waste collection service to allow the safe disposal of old electronic equipment, the multicultural fire awareness day, the interfaith program and others.

In November 2008, Karl has been awarded the Australasian Housing institute Award. In recognition of the valuable work he has displayed and the commitment to Cultural Harmony. 

A part from being a Councillor, Karl is also an active member on various committees for the diverse community and local sporting clubs.
